BIRMINGHAM, AL (January 30, 2024) — If you’ve traveled through Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) recently, you may have noticed more traffic than in recent years. The airport finished 2023 with a 14% increase in total passenger traffic, with 3,056,215 people moving through the terminal.

June and July were the busiest months in 2023 as many families took off on vacations, followed closely by the months of May and November. The increasing traffic is significant as BHM continues to work with airlines to add seats, new routes, and more choices for travelers.

“Traffic growth is helping us when we talk to airlines about growing their service offerings here in Birmingham,” said Ron Mathieu, President & CEO of the Birmingham Airport Authority. “Airlines look for the best opportunities to grow their businesses and increase revenue,” said Mathieu. “More passengers flying through BHM means we have a better story to tell.”

Over the past year, the airlines that serve BHM have added additional flights to cities like New York, Orlando, and Las Vegas. Passengers can fly nonstop from BHM to 18 airport destinations in15 cities, with competing service to several of those markets. The upward trend in traffic is expected to continue at BHM.
