Graham Boettcher, chief curator and curator of American art at the Birmingham Museum of Art, is delighted with the opening of RISING UP: Hale Woodruff’s Murals at Talladega College. The exhibition has traveled across the country and is now back in Alabama, not far from its home at Talladega College. In a recent email, Boettcher set forth the reasons visitors to the exhibition will be delighted too. He enthuses about the narratives of the murals and the historic stories they tell. He also says the color is astounding and shows why Woodruff earned the reputation of one of the boldest colorists in American art and how the artist developed his style of narrative realism. Finally, Boettcher says visitors must look for the hidden treasure, a small likeness of Woodruff himself. Now you’ve been challenged. The exhibition will be at the Birmingham Museum of Art through September 6. http://www.artsbma.org/exhibitions/current/
