(Birth to Rising 5th Grade) Summer is finally here, and we are ready to dive into another summer reading program with you! Starting on May 23, come by the Homewood Public Library’s Children’s Department or visit our website at www.homewoodpubliclibrary.org to sign up for summer reading. Once signed up, come pick up a goodie bag! You’ll receive a calendar reading log to track each day you read or listen to an audiobook. Bring your log to our children’s desk, and for each day you mark off, you will earn an entry in our drawing for a weekly prize! Bon voyage!

(Rising 6th-12th Grade) An “Ocean of Possibilities” await with this year’s summer reading program. Sign up May 23-August 7, 2022 to participate. Dive deep into summer reading! For every three books checked out, receive an entry into our weekly drawing and our end-of-the-summer grand prize drawing! Bring your checkout receipt to the Teen/Adult Services desk to receive your entry slip. Remember, the more entries, the more opportunities to win!

(Adults) Sign up at www.homewoodpubliclibrary.org. For every three books that you check out from the Adult Department, you will get an entry slip to fill out at the Adult Services Desk. Just show them your printed or emailed receipt. There will be a weekly drawing for prize packs and a Grand Prize Drawing at the end of the summer.

Soccer Shots is an engaging children's soccer program with a focus on character development for kids ages 2-8. We will be utilizing various parks in Birmingham for the summer with multiple programs depending on your child's age!

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is the professional organization for architects. With more than 94,000 members nationwide, the organization offers education, government advocacy, community redevelopment, and public outreach. Locally, the AIA Birmingham chapter has 325 members.

Each year, AIA Birmingham hosts Design Awards to recognize excellence in architectural design by architects in the Birmingham Chapter. These awards increase awareness of outstanding architects and honor architects, clients, consultants, and contractors who work together to improve the built environment. Our People's Choice Exhibit gives the public the opportunity to see what our member architects are up to, and vote for their favorite project of the year.

The Alabama Center for Architecture curated 'Evicted Alabama' as a companion piece to the National Building Museum's Evicted exhibit that traveled to Birmingham late last year. Evicted Alabama focuses on eviction, housing, and poverty in Alabama and its four largest metropolitan areas: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery. This companion exhibit visualizes the state of housing and poverty over time in these communities and highlights organizations working to improve housing for families across the state.

Please bring your own blanket or chairs and all your picnic supplies: food, drinks (no alcohol, please), cups, ice, utensils, etc.  Look for the SEO signs.  SEO people will assemble to the right of the stage as you face the band, right where the grass ends and the concrete floor leading to the entrance to the arena begins.   Well-behaved children, but no dogs, are welcome.

Do you wish you had friends who share your active lifestyle and enjoyment of outdoor activities?  Then become active with Southeastern Outings (SEO), a nonprofit organization committed and created to serve people who enjoy being active in the outdoors.  The organization plans, organizes and leads outings such as dayhikes, easy kayak and canoe trips, stream and waterfall walks, bicycle rides, lake events and other fun activities to beautiful sites in our natural environment.  From time to time we also sponsor potluck suppers and other socials.  All events and activities of the group are open to the public.  Participating in SEO activities is a splendid, simple way to make congenial new friends who enjoy the outdoors.

NO DOGS OR SMOKING ALLOWED, PLEASE, ON ANY SOUTHEASTERN OUTINGS EVENTS.

The organization currently has about 300 members.  We have scheduled forty-six fun events for you to enjoy in the first six months of 2022.  This is an average of EIGHT fun outdoor events per month.  We enjoy the outdoors in all seasons throughout the year.

Band concert by the UAB Summer Band.  This large group of carefully auditioned and selected student and professional musicians is an outstanding concert band.  Please bring your own blanket or chairs.   SEO people will assemble to the right of the stage as you face the band, right where the grass ends and the concrete floor leading to the entrance to the arena begins.  Look for the Southeastern Outings signs.  When the concert ends, conveniently enjoy clearly viewing the Birmingham City Fireworks from the picnic area.  Well-behaved children, but no dogs, are welcome.

At approximately 9 p.m., the first of more than 2,500 shells and effects will brighten Vulcan and the sky above him. A unique score featuring artists such as James Brown, Imagine Dragons and Neil Diamond plus a special tribute to The World Games 2022 sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield will be expertly timed and choreographed to the colorful firework display, making it the biggest show Vulcan has put on to date. There will also be a selection of songs as a tribute to the city.
Thunder on the Mountain is presented by Hibbett | City Gear, Medical Properties Trust and UAB Callahan Eye Hospital. Vulcan Park & Museum organized this event with our corporate partners Protective, Regions Bank and Vulcan Materials Company with additional support from City of Birmingham, Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau, City of Homewood, Pyro Shows of Alabama, La Jefa 98.3, iHeart Media Birmingham including Magic 96.5, News Radio 105.5, WERC, 103.7 The Q and 102.5 The Bull; and WBRC Fox 6 News.

Freestyle has developed an innovative Summer Enrichment program with a math and music focus. Studies show that many students lose math and reading knowledge during summer break. According to National Summer Learning association summertime loss learning is linked to a lack of academic achievement and high dropout rate. At Freestyle we aim to provide transformative solutions that aid in reducing the school to prison pipeline in our communities.  Join us in our mission by enrolling students and or sponsoring our camp.

(All Ages) Join us for a Tuesday morning movie with Shark Tale, featuring a star(fish) studded cast of voices such as Will Smith, Jack Black, and Robert DeNiro just to name a few. Crafts will be made, popcorn will be provided, and laughs will be expected!

Visit a world limited only by your imagination! Create your own mermaid story, search for dragon’s eggs, and design your own fairy wings. Each day is an adventure with magical creatures and enchanted activities. Campers explore each day’s theme through dance, art, and drama classes. Students must be camp grade level by the 22-23 school year. Campers will be given a snack break each day and will receive a T-shirt. Camps are led by professionally trained teaching artists in our studios.

If you love everything Harry Potter, then be part of Dumbledore’s Army! Games, crafts, food, and all things magical will happen. Costumes encouraged! Open to rising 6th-12th graders. Register online at www.homewoodpubliclibrary.org/events.

Interested in learning about Magic: the Gathering? Each game represents a battle between wizards known as “planeswalkers”, who employ spells, artifacts, and creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. The market will feature 30-40 vendors mostly socially distanced 10' apart and we will continue to abide by local and state guidelines regarding any COVID ordinances.

This season you'll find all kinds of beautiful and tasty fruits and veggies, meats (beef, chicken, pork, duck, lamb, etc.) eggs, cheese, micro-greens, cauliflower, peppers, bread, baked goods, and so much more. We are aiming for 70% food vendors! In addition, the market is surrounded by great restaurants (GM Pizzeria, Ash, Little London Kitchen, Seeds, BUKA, and Neighbors Ice Cream shop. There will be live entertainment and places to sit and have dinner!

The VH Farmers Market is an outreach ministry of VHUMC, created to bring local crafts and seasonal goods into our community! The market will be open from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm every Wednesday during summer, and is located right off of Highway 31.
