Reunion planning is not just about potlucks and picnics anymore. It’s a thoughtful process of reconnecting people through shared experiences. And according to Sara Hamlin, Vice President of Tourism for the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (GBCVB), the Magic City is made for reconnecting.
“Birmingham’s rich history and culture, vibrant food scene, beautiful parks and outdoor spaces, diverse attractions, range of hotels and venues, and warm hospitality makes the city an appealing choice for reunions,” she said.
To help sort through the options, the GBCVB offers the annual Reunion Planner Expo, where planners learn from event experts and service providers all they need to know about planning “A Reunion to Remember” in Birmingham.
The most recent Reunion Planner Expo took place on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the EDU Warehouse Space in Bessemer and attracted planners from across the Birmingham area.
The keynote speaker for the event was local resident Terrie Morrow, a family historian chosen from a pool of nearly 11,000 submissions to appear on the PBS series “Find Your Roots.” When faced with planning a family reunion timed to the episode’s air date, Morrow turned to GBCVB for help. Within her presentation was a glowing endorsement of the assistance she received.
Other speakers included three instructional GBCVB staff members combining efforts to address reunion planning from a timeline perspective. Ten service providers, including representatives from local hotels, attractions, and vendors, shared information about their roles in reunion planning, and prize drawings added a fun touch to the day.
According to Tara Walton, GBCVB’s Director of Tourism, the Expo event was a huge success.
“I heard from planners and exhibitors alike that the experience was valuable,” she said. “They had gained a better understanding of what a CVB is, and they were encouraged to hear that we can be of service throughout the reunion planning process. Planners left more prepared and ready to organize a memorable event.”
But most importantly, they gained the confidence of realizing they are not alone. Whether planning reunions of family and friends, former classmates, or military units, the planners now know that GBCVB has their backs. Not only do they have access to information on locations, attractions, and activities in the Birmingham area, GBCVB can also help them find the right lodging and vendors.
“Our tourism professionals can help reunion planners stay within budget while still offering high-quality services and experiences,” said Hamlin, “and we’re always happy to help.”
