An all new exhibit focusing on conservation and welfare is open now at the Birmingham Zoo. The Barbara Ingalls Shook Black Bear Trail is an educational exhibit with two distinct habitats for the zoo’s rescued North American black bears. Bety and Sassy move freely from “grandma’s backyard in rural Alabama to the wilds of the state.” The “backyard” habitat shows how humans can share the same environment with native wildlife. In the “wild” habitat, visitors can watch the bears foraging for food among the trees, logs and streams. Almost 950 animals of 230 species, including sea lions, zebras, rhinos and endangered forms of animal life, call the Birmingham Zoo home. www.birminghamzoo.com
