Welcome! Without a doubt, the best way to see any city is hand in hand with one of its native sons or fervently patriotic transplants–people who know all the best local hot spots and secret treasures. So, we asked them to write it all down for you. In this book you will find the best of thousands of suggested IN spots from residents across the city. They were collected over the course of several months in a city wide open call for INput as part of the BirmINgham campaign. In the collective history of our organizations, we cannot think of a city promotion that has attracted more interest and participation locally than has this one. Since the moment we invited folks to make their nominations for favorite local IN spots, the fervor hasn’t diminished one whit. Hundreds upon hundreds of people took the time and interest to speak their minds about the places and events in the area that are dearest to them. From Chez Fonfon to Mama’s front porch, the nominations and comments were as varied and colorful as the places that make up the fabric of the city. If you cast a nomination–and some people sent dozens–we thank you for your participation and enthusiasm. Some of you were downright adamant about what should be recognized as an IN spot. Some of you, with your hilarious comments, obviously missed your calling as comedy writers. But all of you caught the fever because it was indeed an infectiously amusing undertaking. If you are a visitor to the city, you are holding in your hands a guide to the places and happenings that local folks like best. It is a gift to you from the people of Birmingham and very likely unlike anything you’ve ever before found in your travels. Enjoy. JAmEs H. smiTHEr russEll CunningHAm
